This Week: A Father’s Love..

The Prodigal Son is a story from the Bible about a young man who leaves home and spends all his money on bad things. God seeks us out and desires closeness with us, even when we make mistakes. Although God is saddened by sin, He promises to forgive us when we genuinely repent. There is nothing we can do that will separate us forever from His love. He wants the best for us because He loves us!

There is a father and two sons living together and working the land. The younger son wanted to be free from all his father’s control. He didn’t want to work in the fields anymore. He wanted to receive his inheritance before his father even died. He wanted the freedom that money would bring and believed that being free from his father’s presence would make him truly happy. But the father loved his son and agreed to give him his share of the inheritance. He made the terrible decision to exchange the love and warmth of his family for the temporary pleasures of sin. He ends up eating and sleeping with pigs and was so hungry and dirty. At his lowest point, he began remembering how GOOD things were back home. He remembered his father’s hugs. He remembered how safe and loved and secure he felt in his home. He became homesick! And he began to plan a way to return to his father. The son decided to go back, confess his sins to his father, and ask for mercy. This is called repentance. When you repent, you “change your mind” and “turn away from sin.” His father is waiting for him and is so happy to see him that he throws a big party.

“REMEMBER”

The Parable of the Prodigal Son is that God loves us unconditionally, no matter what we have done. This story teaches us that no matter how far we stray from God, He is always willing to take us back and forgive us. This parable also shows us the importance of repentance and forgiveness.

1) It’s never too late to come back home.

2) God is always willing to take us back and forgive us.

3) God loves us no matter what we do.

4) Families are important.

WHAT IS THE BIBLE: The Story Begins

1st Through 3rd Grade

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Parable of the Prodigal Son shows us that God’s love is abundant, and He is willing to forgive and receive repentant sinners. God is faithful. The Father in the story shows us what God is like. The brothers in the story show us what we are like. The point is that God wants to save both people who follow the rules and people who break all the rules. God accepts us as sinners and forgives us when we repent of our sins. The prodigal son thought he could return as a servant to his father and yet he was restored to his place as a son.

Can You Answer These Questions?

4th Through 5th Grade

WHAT HAPPENED?

The prodigal son puts his own will first in order to satisfy his own selfish cravings. His father allowed him to choose his own path. Every son was supposed to honour his father and carry on his father’s name. The son was viewed not as an individual but as an extension of his father and family. The father split his estate and delivered his portion to the youngest son without complaint. Over time, the son spent all his money and found himself penniless.

We must remember that God’s ways are right, good, and beneficial. When we leave the Father’s protective care, we are on the road to ruin.
